Yesterday we had a near tragedy here in lovely Key West.

Our Maizy girl is a very curious little dog.

Last fall, when we walked across the longest pedestrian bridge in America in Little Rock, Arkansas, she was always stopping to have a look.

and in Key West....the same.  She took a look out to sea to check out the scenery from a very wide sea wall at a dog beach we were investigating.  Here of course, she's posing for her close up!

Well, we went for long walk later that day.  As we were "deploying" the dogs from the truck Maizy and Callie managed to wrap their leashes up in a tangle and as I tried to untangle I did not pay attention to Miss Maizy.  Apparently she decided to jump upon this new sea wall.  I heard all the claw scrabbling and the leash suddenly went VERY taut.

I looked and screamed "my dog's drowning!!"  as she had disappeared over the seawall!  Maizy did not know this sea wall was only a couple inches wide and at least 5 feet down on the other side.  Panic set in, people ran over to help but Paul just let go of Chloe's leash and hauled Maizy out of the drink by her leash and choke chain as the wall was too far to jump over and into the ocean, and there was no way to get back out if you did for a lonnnnnngggg way.  Now I was worried we would asphyxiate the poor dog as she was being "rescued"!  After being deposited back on the sidewalk She splittered and spluttered a lot, blew out her nose, shook it off and was ready to go.  She drank and ate like normal so there seems to be no apparent negative consequences to her little "cliff diving" episode.  Later we laughed so hard thinking how shocked she must have been to jump and go right over into the sea!  Now THAT would have been a great AHV video!!  We were so grateful no other dogs came along at that moment since Chloe was off lead and would have had a great opportunity to get into a dog fight - what a mess THAT would have been.
well

  1. Sounds exciting, glad she was alright. That shot of her on the sea wall is great! Hope you're getting some good weather.
